Art > Milk
The installation and series of photographs conducted between 1996-1997, occupies an 8’ x 9’ space and uses silicone molds made from frozen breast milk. The forms were created in clay, plaster and wax molds and placed on paper, gauze and silk. The installation containing over 50 objects recalls the early work of Kiki Smith where the artist used bodily fluids as the basis of her sculpture. Katz’s installation feels like a lunar landing: it is strangely tactile and disconcerting. The project began after the birth of her daughter when the artist brought her child to the studio where she had to breastfeed while trying to work.
