Let's Take a (Virtual, Twitter Guided) Walk #41 Saturday 3/21 at 3pm (EST)

During this time where it’s vital to stay secluded and to keep our distances from each other,

I invite you to share a virtual Twitter-guided Walk. We will be walking separately but sharing a journey, a momentfrom anywhere in the world, indoor or outdoor.

Let’s Take a Walk #41 will take place on Saturday March 21st at 3pm (EST)

Please join me via ‪@mcayer on Twitter. To see past walks click LTAW

For those of you new to this project here is a short intro:

    Let’s Take a Walk

Since 2009 I have conducted LTAW, a worldwide walk I lead using Twitter ‪@mcayer to guide a shared journey, walking together apart. As I take and tweet a left turn, participants from anywhere in the world also turn left.During the walk, I ask questions about current social topics, prompting dialogues and actions. Together, though apart, we will journey along creating a similar footprint on different soil.

Note that sometimes LTAW also takes place on site as a performance, but this is not feasible at present. During such performances, a Town Crier, a Tweet Master, and a Drummer assist me. Passerby’s are invited to join in as well. We film and photograph our journeys, which I compile later into an installation, incorporating costumes and props used during the walk. This final product demonstrates the experience of walking in different places yet moving in sync.

So far, there have been 40 walks; each is a shared moment—a step towards peace.

As always, I thank you for your participation, from near or far I am so glad to share a journey with you.

I wish you and your loved ones well.

Work in Progress Workshop 12/12/19 at The Fountain House Gallery

    Dear friends
I am delighted to present the workshop element of Work in Progress at Fountain House Gallery
on Thursday, December 12th from 5-7 pm
During the workshop we will repair, upcycle and transform damaged or incomplete items you'll bring, turning those items into new wearable art creations and rendering them usable again. This workshop encourages storytelling and an exchange of ideas relating to what actions do we take collectively and individually to safeguard our planet and contribute towards positive change.
Two wondeful musicians, Kane Dunaley Balsner and Hernan Sanhueza, will be gifting us with their music.
Join us and be part of this festive evening of art, music, and mingling. You will have an opportunity to support The Fountain House’s programs as you shop at the Annual Small Works exhibition & a pop-up from Fountain House & Body for holiday gifts while enjoying lite bites and upcycle your items.
The Fountain House Gallery and Studio provides an environment where artists living with mental illness can express their creative visions, exhibit their work, and challenge the stigma that surrounds mental illness.
Your friends, colleagues, and family are welcome please

For those of you new to Let's Take a Walk here is a short description of this project I started in March 2010.

    Let’s Take a Walk

LTAW is a worldwide walk I lead using Twitter to guide a shared journey, walking together apart. As I take a left turn, for example, participants from anywhere in the world also turn left. Together, though apart, we’ll journey along creating a similar foot print on different soil. On site, sometimes alone, sometimes assisted by a Town Crier, a Tweet Master, and a Drummer, the public and passer by are invited to join in. During the walk, I ask questions about social topics, prompting dialogues, inviting participants to sing a song, say something nice to someone, etc. We film and photograph our journeys, which I compile later into an installation that includes costumes and props used during the walk along with sound, photographs and videos, showing the experience of our group walking in different places yet moving in sync. So far there have been 38 walks; each is a shared moment—a step towards peace.

Hangers101 & A Litany of Hashtags at Local Project June 15th

    Dear Friends and Supporters

I am please to  present the performance Hangers 101 & A Litany of Hashtags as part of
Back to the Future with performances curated by Matti Havens
    June 15th at 7pm
At Local Project, 11-27th 44th Rd
    Long Island City, Queens

Hangers 101 & A Litany of Hashtagsan interdisciplinary, participatory project based on the current political/social climate.
Phase one began on the first day of the new administration. For 100 days I create sculptural elements from hangers and other material, inspired, in part, by the news of the day.
In the studio or out in the street, I made a daily visual gesture and invited participants to pose with or add to the sculptures while asking their thoughts on the current state of affairs.
These thoughts are translated into hashtags, such as #climatechange #womensrighttochoose, #agaistthewall #peace among others and are shared via Instagram @mcayer27
    as photography accompanied by hashtags.
Phase two of Hangers 101 took place at the Glasshouse Neo-Domesticity Performance Art Festival with “A Litany of Hashtags” which premiers at the 11th hour of my 12 hours action as well as
during the Bergen Art Festival in Norway and the New York Studio School exhibition.

    The performance,
A Litany of Hashtags includes a monologue created from a selection of responses participants gave me regarding their thoughts and feelings about what is happening around us and in the world.

Back to the Future is an evening of performance art at Local Project. It will celebrate our potential and also address our concerns for the future while looking back at our past.
This project is part of Local Project's Emerging Curators Program 2019.
Thank you for your continuous support
